Please Join Us in WALKING THERE.
In conjunction with the St. Monica School theme for 2011-2012, “We are on a Journey,” there is an art installation entitled WALKING THERE which focuses on spiritual migration. In the artist’s statement about the work, artist Carmen Bond explains that “the sculptural piece, featuring seven legs on a path of 1,000 incised or stamped clay stones, examines the pilgrimage we all take to find something to fill the hole in the core of our personhood that is essence or soul.”
The work is located on the corner of Santa Monica Blvd. and Silver Spring Drive, in front of the church’s sign, where it will be highly visible and at the crossroads of our community. The location was chosen by our pastor, Fr. Jerry Herda. The path of stones will be created over a few weeks by various constituencies of parish life, with the goal of creating and placing 1,000 stones on the project’s path. Over time, the unfired clay stones will erode and return to the earth at that location.
The school children made their stones after the school Mass on October 4th, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, which focused on life’s migration, and was planned by Mrs. Bond, who is also one of the eighth grade teachers. Students placed their stones on the path to establish a location to which participants in the Adult Formation program (Café Aduro, prayer groups, RCIA, etc.), the Religious Education program, the Confirmation program and other groups will add their stones. As an integral part of this project focuses on how we are a community on a journey, we are inviting all parishioners to participate in this project; based on the installation’s concept. We welcome all to be a part of this unique exploration of spirituality. If you have any questions about the project, please contact Dr. Anne Rice at (332-3660, ext 171).
All those attending Mass on Sunday, October 23rd will have the opportunity to make clay stones in the vestibule and at the parking lot entrance of the church. Stop by on your way to the Flu Shot Clinic and/or Donut Day in Donovan Hall.
